Take a free boat ride in Stockholm
Ok… so you will need a valid SL (travel) card with either credit or a 1,3, 7 or 30 day pass… but that really is all it costs to take a trip on the Djurgården ferry. If you plan to use public transport regularly, you can buy a 1, 3, 7 or 30 day travel card (read all travel card information here in English).
This free boat ride operates on a ‘hop on, hop off’ concept & contains a direct link from Djurgården (where you will find many of the best museums that Stockholm has to offer including The Vasa Museum) to Slussen (the terminal is called Slussen but is actually located on The Old Town of Gamla Stan) and the small island of Skeppsholmen (where you can find the free Moderna Museet – The Modern Art Museum).
A much more interesting way to travel around these three points in Stockholm than your regular bus or tram, and definitely the best value boat trip you will find in the capital of Sweden. Our verdict: the Djurgården ferry is a must for anyone visiting Stockholm, and anyone looking for a bargain boat ride!
Our day trip suggestion using the Djurgården Ferry:
- Spend the morning on the island on Djurgården and take a trip to Skansen or Vasamuseet, exploring this historic vessel in all its… well… complete failure as a mode of transport (!)
- From Djurgården, take the free Djurgården ferry from the terminal next to Grönalund (Stockholm’s theme park) across the water to Slussen (which is right by Gamla Stan).
- While away the afternoon hours exploring the cobbled streets and hidden alleys of Stockholm’s Old Town (Gamla Stan), making sure you don’t forget to have plenty of Fika (Swedish coffee time) in one of its many cafes – we recommend Kaffekoppen or Murens.
- Hop back on the free boat as you take the short trip over to Skeppsholmen. Enjoy a drink in the Skeppsholmen Hotel Cafe or, to stick to a shoestring budget, head to Moderna Museet or buy your picnic dinner before you board the ferry and find one of the many benches or green spaces to enjoy those long, light Swedish summer evenings.
Location: Djurgården, Slussen & Skeppsholmen.
Operating times: For more information, and all other ferry options visit Waxholmsbolaget website or the SL website.
