Where to see the best views of Stockholm
And the best part…it’s totally free!
Whether you’re looking to explore the city in the summer or winter, by day or night, we have the perfect places to view Stockholm City’s impressive skyline. (And photographers – we have your complete guide to Stockholm here!)
Katarinahissen – Slussen
Head over to Katarinahissen on Slussen where you can find by day or night for a great view back across the city, including Gamla Stan (Stockholm’s Old Town).
Katarinahissen (or Katarina Elevator) was built to help connect the lower streets of Slussen to the heights of Södermalm, making them more accessible to locals. The original lift construction dates back to 1881, although much of the remaining structure is from its renovation in 1936. But there is good news for the future of Katarinahissen and Slussen: The Elevator is set to open again in 2019 as part of a significant renovation project.
How to get there: While the elevator is not currently in operation, you can still get a great view from the platform that houses the elevator.
- Take the T-bana to Slussen (Green Line) and exit via the Götgatan exit.
- From Götgatan, walk up the cobbled street of Hökens Gata.
- At the top of this street, take a left and there you will see the entrance to Katarina gångbro (footbridge).
Katarinavägen and beyond – Södermalm
Alternatively, if panoramic scenic photographs are what you are after in Stockholm, a short walk up Katarinavägen, (and just a little further onto Fjällgatan for even better views) will take you to a a viewpoint offering, in our opinion, perhaps the best panoramic view of the city (only a 5 – 10 minute walk from Slussen T-bana).
(TOP TOP: While you’re there, why not head to Herman’s for a great value vegetarian buffet lunch!)
Inner City Views
If don’t mind a steep walk, be sure to head over to Stadsbibliotek (City Library) and climb the hill directly behind it (there are footpaths and benches at the top) for breathtaking views across the city’s rooftops.
Seasonal views in Stockholm
One great thing about these views of Stockholm is that a scenic stroll isn’t as dependent on the seasons as you might think. Be it a clear summer’s day, a crisp autumn morning or a white winter landscape, the changing seasons of Sweden all have something to offer to onlookers.
So whenever you happen to be passing through Stockholm, a view of the city is a must…and when you can do it for free, this is a definite or anyone looking to see the Stockholm on a Shoestring.
And if you're planning on visiting Stockholm any time soon, Booking.com has some great deals on hotels in and around the city. Highly recommended!
